Just K, a zero energy house in Tübingen (Germany), gained first place in the AR House Awards, securing prize-money worth 5,000 pounds sterling. The successful project, carried out by young architects Martenson, Nagel, Theissen (Stuttgart, Germany), beat very stiff competition. The panel of judges, chaired by Catherine Slessor (hosting the AR) was very impressed by the innovative approach the building took to shapes, context and energy consumption. Just K is a detached house that is a new interpretation of the archetypal suburban villa. Particularly eye-catching are not just the grey colour and outer skin, but the tower-like superstructure with roof and walls at different inclines.

In addition to Catherine Slessor, the panel of judges included Beatriz Colomina (Spain/US), Níall McLaughlin (Ireland) and Crispin Kelly (UK). From the private house projects submitted, they selected four in second place, each of which was presented with £1,250. A further ten projects received special mentions. Along with the winners, they will be showcased at an exhibition to be opened on the same day as the official award presentation ceremony on 7 September in the NLA Building Centre in London. From 6.30 p.m. the winners will receive their awards and those placed first will have the chance of showing and discussing their project. The exhibition will run until mid autumn in London and then move to the Laufen Forum in Laufen (Basel region, Switzerland). „We congratulate the winners of the AR House Awards“, comments Alberto Magrans, Senior Managing Director at Laufen, „The high level of the projects submitted proves that our commitment to innovative architecture is the right course to pursue“.
