The AR House Awards, which will be awarded for the third time in 2012, wish to promote and strengthen the tradition of private house architecture, which enjoys a unique status both in the history of architecture and in the human culture – from Le Corbusier to Koolhaas, the history of modern architecture can be traced through a series of groundbreaking private houses. Their core function is to provide shelter, a secure roof over one“s head – but they are also objects of desire, the canvas onto which people project their wishes, a playground for architects and a proposal for how we might live in balance with ourselves and the wider planet.

An international jury of Sofia von Ellrichshausen (Chile), Brian MacKay-Lyons (Canada), Peter Salter (UK) and AR editor Catherine Slessor assessed nearly 200 submissions from all over the world regardless of the size, location, budget or age of the project and chose a group of 12 winning projects. The only condition was that the building project must have already been completed. The award ceremony took place on Tuesday 26 June in London and all winning projects will be published in detail in the July edition of Architectural Review. This years overall winner is John Lin, Dept of Architecture, University of Hong Kong for a housing project in the Shaanxi Province, China. The other highly commended projects are situated in Australia, Ireland, Japan and Spain.

Laufen sponsors the prestigious awards for the second time. „Laufen has a strong commitment to innovative architecture, from which we draw a great deal of inspiration“, says Alberto Magrans, Senior Managing Director at Laufen, „and the AR House Awards are a great opportunity to give something back. “ During the last decade, Laufen has designed many products that can be incorporated seamlessly into bathroom architecture and demonstrate a profound understanding of the Swiss company of architectural concepts and the space in itself.
